3M Filtrete Air Filter Overview Video Transcript
Hey everyone, Tony the Filter Doctor here. Today weíre looking at the 3M Filtrete Air Filters.
Now, these air filters are available in five levels of filtration, and each of them uses an electrostatic filter media that is significantly superior to non-electrostatic, washable and fiberglass filter media.
Now, all 3M Filtrete air filters are tested and given an MPR rating which stands for micro-particle performance rating. And this is a testing process that measures the filters effectiveness at removing particles from 0.3 to 1 micron in size. And theyíve chosen that size range because 99% of all airborne particles fall into that size range.
Another common rating for air filters is known as the minimum efficiency reporting value or MERV rating; and Iíll give you those numbers for these filters as well.
Now, for starters we have the dust and pollen with the light blue category. This is 3Mís most basic filter; it has an MPR rating of 600, which is equivalent to a MERV 8. And even though this is a low-end filter as it goes with 3M, this filter is still ten times more effective than a typical fiberglass filter.
Now, next we have the Micro Allergen. Now, this is slightly better with an MPR rating of 1000, which is equivalent to about a MERV 11; just slightly better performance than the dust and pollen.
And then moving on, we have the Ultra Allergen. Now, this has an MPR of 1,500 and has a 90% efficiency of removing particles from 0.3 to 1 micron in size. This is equivalent to a MERV 11, and it captures 25% more particles than the Micro Allergen filter does and it does that with a 15% better flow rate. It has a unique design and this is a significant step up from the Micro Allergen.
Now, next we have the Ultimate Allergen. This has an MPR rating of 1,900, which is a 93% efficiency of removing particles 0.3 to 1 micron in size. Itís equivalent to a MERV 12 rating, and again, this filter captures 25% more particles than the Ultra Allergen.
And then lastly we have the Elite Allergen. This is 3Mís best air filter; it has an MPR of 2,200, which is a 94% efficiency of removing particles from 0.3 to 1 micron in size. Thatís equivalent to a MERV 15 rating; that is way high. This is the kind of filter they use in hospitals and other extremely clean environments. And again, as you might expect, this filter captures 25% more particles than the Ultimate Allergen.
Now, all of these filters are available in a variety of standard sizes, including 14 by 20, 14 by 25, 16 by 20, 16 by 25, 20 by 20, 20 by 25, and 20 by 30.
Now, regardless of category, these should all be replaced approximately every three months. And there are some unique circumstances that will have an impact on these filters and shorten their average life-span. Those things include smoking, sanding or other construction events that cause dust to float into the environment, the burning of candles, using a fireplace or a woodstove. These are all examples of things that will add more particulate matter into the air and thus shorten your average filter life.
Again, these are the 3M Filtrete Air Filters, and Iím your host Tony the Filter Doctor.
