Chloramines are disinfectants used to treat drinking water. Chloramines are most commonly formed when ammonia is added to chlorine to treat drinking water. The typical purpose of chloramines is to provide longer-lasting water treatment as the water moves through pipes to consumers. Like Chlorine, Chloramine is added to municipal water supplies to kill harmful bacteria that may be present in the water. Chloramine is weaker than Chlorine, but approximately 10 times more difficult to remove. Chloramine is not regulated by the EPA as a health-related contaminant.
